The 9 Top Skin-Care Trends of 2023

The 9 Top Skin-Care Trends of 2023

The pursuit of eternally youthful, glowing skin can seem like a lifelong quest with lots of dead ends if you aren’t using the right skincare or don’t have access to the world’s top skincare experts. Nothing can boost your confidence like fabulous skin, and I believe every person should be able to have it, regardless of where they live or what they currently know about skin care.

“Getting better-looking skin is possible, and getting it is faster and more streamlined with multi-tasking products, more powerful ingredients, and devices that help you uncover radiant skin at home.”

  • Shani Darden, esthetician

I’ve been an esthetician for decades, so it’s important for me to understand the latest technologies and ingredients available. Now, I have the opportunity to share my knowledge with you. I’ll cover the top nine skincare trends you’ll see popping up in 2023 and explain how each of them has a place in your own routine.

Top 9 Skin-Care Trends

First, it was oil-cleansing, then it was slugging. There are so many fads that come and go it’s hard for the average non-industry person to decide which is going to help their skin and which may leave them with seriously congested pores.

This year, I sorted through the trends to give you the top skin-care trends that can actually support your skin.

1. Sculpted Skin

Inspired by the millions of Instagram and TikTok makeup baddies who can literally create high, arched cheekbones with foundation and concealer, sculpted skin is a trend that will keep your skin looking lifted, toned, and youthful without a massive amount of makeup.

Facial sculpting uses technology that can target sagging skin, crows feet, eyebrow furrows, and nasolabial lines with acoustic sound waves. For instance, my Facial Sculpting Wand™ targets problematic areas of the skin at their origin instead of on a superficial level.

By transmitting sound waves six centimeters below the surface of the skin, my Facial Sculpting Wand helps target facial muscles and encourage circulation, which can help support a healthy glow and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The results are immediate; you’ll feel amazing and notice visibly lifted skin. Used daily, you may begin to notice fine lines and wrinkles soften, and your skin tone becomes more radiant.

My device has three intensity settings for your comfort level and two attachments to help you target larger areas of the skin (like the forehead and jowls) and smaller areas (like around the eyes and lips).

2. A Better Barrier

Protecting your skin barrier is important because your skin literally is your body’s barrier. The outermost layer of your skin is made up of important lipids and proteins that help protect the deeper layers of your skin and, by extension, your body.

The skin barrier takes a beating because it’s exposed to so many external stressors. Pollution, UV rays, and even improper skincare products and practices can all cause damage to the skin barrier. When the barrier gets damaged, those same stressors can damage deeper layers of the skin.

My go-to ingredient for skin barrier protection is squalane. This is an ingredient that helps give your skin’s natural oil its chemical makeup, and it’s an excellent hydrating ingredient that can help create a moisture barrier on the surface of the skin.

You can find it inside my Hydration Peptide Cream, along with plumping peptides and Hydrosella™, an ingredient created to give your skin up to 72 hours of hydration.

3. Preventive Measures

I see a lot of clients in their 20s and 30s who want to defend their skin against premature aging and prevent uneven skin tone, dullness, and wrinkles before they start. They’re already doing the basics: using sunscreen daily, staying hydrated, and being seen by a dermatologist.

My suggestion is to level up their skin care. An easy skin care system that can help you tackle cleansing, toning, and moisturizing is my Daily Essential Skin Balancing Routine. It has everything you need to support your skin and minimize visible signs of aging.

This includes:

  • Cleansing Serum. This is a gentle, hyaluronic acid cleanser formulated with oat bran extract to protect and hydrate the skin barrier and olive and chicory leaf extract to help soothe skin irritation.
  • Sake Toning Essence. This toner can help mattify oily areas and brighten the skin without alcohol. Sake is loaded with antioxidants to offer protection against the visible effects of oxidative stress. It also contains Sebocytine to help support healthy oil production and tighten the appearance of pores.
  • Weightless Oil-Free Moisturizer. This daily moisturizer features hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed collagen to plump the skin and help restore skin texture. Red algae extract loads skin with nutrients to help nourish and protect it.

4. LED Light Therapy

The use of red, blue, and near-infrared light to address blemishes, fade the appearance of wrinkles and lines, and help even skin tone is a rapidly growing technology. I love it because you get quantifiable results fast. When I developed the Déesse PRO LED Light Mask, I wanted to create the same type of light therapy facial treatment I was able to give my in-office clients to at-home users.

This FDA-cleared device has 238 red, blue, and near-infrared LED lights capable of delivering clinically proven doses of light so you can have clearer, calmer, and more radiant-looking skin. I also developed an attachment to address the neck, an often overlooked area that can show signs of aging.

5. Retinol

Retinol is one of my favorite skincare ingredients. It quite literally does it all. From anti-aging to brightening and smoothing, retinol is a solution that can help every age and every skin type. There’s just one problem: it works so well that it can be a little too harsh for some skin types.

That’s why I developed Retinol Reform®. Retinol Reform allows everyone to get the retinol they want with minimal irritation and redness. It works because it contains encapsulated retinol that is time-released throughout the night. Your skin gets all the retinol but in smaller, less irritating doses.

I also included lactic acid to help smooth and brighten the skin and apple fruit extract to help load the skin with antioxidants. This is the number one product I recommend to all of my clients to keep their skin glowing in between facials.

6. Powerful At-Home Peels

The first treatment I give my A-list clients before they have a big red carpet event is a lactic acid peel. Lactic Acid peels help to reveal radiant, more youthful skin to give you an amazing glow.

I wanted to create a powerful, at-home peel that everyone could use to get the same level of healthy, gorgeous skin, so I developed my Triple Acid Signature Peel. Lactic acid can help exfoliate away dead skin cells, while glycolic acid digs deep into pores to remove congestion. The third acid, mandelic acid, exfoliates, polishes, and brightens without irritation.

The second part of this at-home peel system treats the skin with kaolin clay and bentonite clay, which help remove deeply trapped dirt and impurities and deep clean the skin. You can use this peel twice a month to maintain skin health and restore your skin’s glow.

7. Effective Eye Cream

The skin around the eyes is a small area, but there are a lot of issues to address in this hot zone. Bags, dryness, dark circles, crepiness, and fine lines all require different ingredients that can have you applying multiple layers of eye creams.

I banished the need for multiple products with my Intensive Eye Renewal Cream. With nine age-defying actives to target every eye-area concern, you only need one product, letting you simplify your skincare routine with updated, more efficient products.

8. Sunscreen and Moisturizer In One

I always tell my clients it is not necessary to apply both sunscreen and moisturizer. Grab one product for the job and save yourself some time and your skin an added layer of product. Today’s combination sunscreen and moisturizers are packed with high-quality ingredients and delivered in fast-absorbing, non-sticky formulas.

My go-to is Supergoop!™ Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50. This ultra-light lotion contains SPF 50 that offers protection against UVA (aging), UVB (burning), and IRA waves. It won’t congest the skin and helps protect against the visible effects of photoaging.

Oat faction helps comfort skin and soothe irritation, while candle bush extract helps fade the visible signs of sun damage. It’s also loaded with marine microorganisms to help defend against infrared radiation.

9. An Instant Glow

You can get virtually anything delivered instantly these days, or at least within a couple of hours. Why shouldn’t you be able to get a healthy glow in the same amount of time? It’s possible with lactic acid. I’m obsessed with how lactic acid naturally brightens the skin, resurfaces it, and literally transforms it overnight. Lactic acid is a powerful exfoliant and skin-tone corrector.

When my clients want to address dullness, rough texture, or tired-looking skin, I always grab my Lactic Acid Serum. There’s just no ingredient like it that addresses all these issues in one.

My serum is formulated for nighttime use to help you wake up to glowing skin. Formulated with nine percent lactic acid, my serum smoothens your skin while you sleep, so you wake up to plump, radiant skin by morning. I also included four types of hyaluronic acid to keep the skin ultra-hydrated, and green and white tea extracts to help load the skin with antioxidants.

Combining Lactic Acid Serum with Retinol Reform is an excellent way to get the most skin rejuvenation. When combining, only use Lactic Acid Serum on Retinol Reform rest nights and introduce it slowly to allow skin time to acclimate.

Better Skin Trends

It’s 2023 — you can probably access better skin care products and routines than you’re currently using. Getting better-looking skin is possible, and getting it is faster and more streamlined with combination products, more powerful ingredients, and tools that help you uncover radiant skin at home.

Don’t settle for skincare that doesn’t work for you just because it works for someone else. One of my qualified, expert estheticians can help you address any skin concern you are having and create a skincare routine and treatment plan for you.
