How to Layer Retinol Reform® with Your Skincare Routine

How to Layer Retinol Reform® with Your Skincare Routine

Retinol is one of the most powerful ingredients in skincare, but using it the right way makes all the difference. If you’ve recently added  Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol to your routine, you might be wondering when to apply it, what to layer it with, and how to avoid irritation.

This guide walks you through how to get the most out of your retinol, step by step.

Why Application Order Matters

Layering your skincare in the right order helps each product perform at its best. This is especially important with a high-performance formula like  Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol, which uses a slow-release delivery system to target signs of aging and improve texture, all while being gentle enough for many skin types. When used correctly, it can deliver dramatic results over time. But improper layering can lead to dryness, irritation, or reduced effectiveness.

When to Use  Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol

Use retinol only at night – and always follow with sunscreen the next morning.

Apply Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol after cleansing and before moisturizer. If you use a hydrating serum, like Moisture Boost Plumping Serum, that can go just before or after retinol depending on your skin's tolerance. Avoid pairing retinol with strong exfoliants or other actives on the same night.

Your Nighttime Routine: Step-by-Step

Here’s a simple layering order to follow on retinol nights:

1. Cleanser
Use a gentle, non-stripping formula to prep your skin.
Shani’s Cleansing Serum is ideal. It removes makeup and impurities without disrupting the skin barrier.

2. Toner or Essence (optional)
Stick to soothing, hydrating options only — no exfoliating acids.
Sake Nourishing Essence helps hydrate and prep skin without irritation, making it a great pairing for retinol nights.

3. Rescue Serum (optional - use on non-retinol nights or in the AM)
Rescue Serum is a calming, clarifying serum with 10% Azelaic Acid that supports breakout-prone skin and helps reduce the look of congestion.
Use it in your morning routine or alternate nights when you’re not using retinol for best results.

4. Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol
Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin. Avoid the eye area.

5. Moisturizer
Use a hydrating cream to lock in moisture and reduce dryness.
Hydration Peptide Cream and Moisture Boost Plumping Serum are both excellent choices depending on your texture preference.
Pro tip: If you’re new to retinol, try applying moisturizer before and after to buffer your skin (“moisture sandwich” method).

Note: If your skin is feeling extra dry or tight, use a calming, hydrating mask on a non-retinol night to keep your skin barrier strong. Avoid exfoliating or purifying masks before applying retinol.

Can I Still Exfoliate If I’m Using Retinol?

Yes, but timing matters.  Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol already promotes cell turnover, so you don’t need to exfoliate as often.

If you want to add an exfoliating product to your routine, use it on non-retinol nights only. Try:

Never layer exfoliating acids on the same night as retinol.

What Not to Use with Retinol Reform® with 1% Encapsulated Retinol

To keep your skin calm and balanced, avoid layering these on the same night:

  • AHAs or BHAs (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid)
  • Physical scrubs
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Vitamin C (unless your skin tolerates both well, otherwise, use Vitamin C in the morning)

Instead, focus on hydration and barrier support while your skin adjusts.

How to Know If It’s Working

Signs that you’re layering correctly:

  • Your skin feels smoother and looks more even-toned over time
  • Mild dryness or tightness in early weeks is normal
  • Little to no redness, flaking, or stinging

Pro tip: Start with 2–3 nights per week, then increase frequency gradually as your skin builds tolerance.

Final Tips for Success

  • Always wear sunscreen daily, retinol makes your skin more sun-sensitive.
  • Be patient, it can take several weeks to see full results.
  • Pair retinol with hydrating, calming products to keep your skin balanced.
